What a keyword position tracker has to record, and how website keyword ranking becomes something you can actually read

Updated

Almost every keyword position tracker records the same headline thing, which is a number against a keyword. The difference between a record you can use and one you cannot is the rest of it: which page the query was aimed at, where the reading came from, what device and place it was taken on, and when. Without those, website keyword ranking is a number that cannot be compared with the next one, and a comparison is the only reason anybody records a position at all.

The page, not just the keyword

A position without the target page hides the most common problem in this work, which is that the wrong page ranks. If your buying guide is meant to hold the query and a blog post from two years ago is the one showing, the number can be perfectly healthy while the plan is broken. Recording the intended page next to the query is what surfaces that, and it costs nothing to do.

The source of the reading

An average position from Search Console and a checked position from a tracker are two different measurements and they will not agree. Neither is wrong. What is wrong is putting them in the same column, because the series then shows a jump on the month somebody changed source. Write down where each reading came from and keep the series consistent.

Device and place

Both change what is on the screen, and one of them changes it enormously for anything with local intent. A record that does not say whether this was a mobile reading, or which city it was checked in, cannot be compared with next month's unless you happen to remember. Two extra fields remove an entire class of argument later.

The date, and then leaving it alone

The last field is the one people skip because it feels obvious at the time. It is not obvious in November what the March number was measuring. Longtailo Pro keeps all four against the keyword, so the question of whether a page moved is answered from the record rather than reconstructed.

Questions people ask about keyword position tracker

What is the difference between average position and a checked position?

Average position is calculated over the impressions your page actually received in a period. A tracker checks a result page at a moment from a chosen place and device. They measure different things and will not match.

How many keywords should I track?

The ones you have aimed a page at, and no more. Tracking queries you have not written for produces a long list nobody reads and hides the ten rows that matter.

Why does the wrong page rank for my keyword?

Usually because two of your pages answer the same intent and the search engine picks one, which is a clustering problem rather than a tracking one. Consolidating them is the fix.

Does Longtailo take the reading?

No. It holds the reading you take, with the page, the source, the device and the date, and shows the series over time.
